About the art:
Originally created for the Drawn in San Antonio exhibition at the McNay Art Museum, Coagulation of Deceit is a detailed ink self-portrait exploring proximity, illusion, and the fragmentation of truth.
Based on a photograph taken during a harmful relationship, the drawing transforms what once appeared intimate into something unsettling. The two faces press together: one rendered natural and contemplative, the other dissolving into a mass of mouths.
The repetition of teeth and lips replaces identity with noise, and perhaps danger. Words overlap. Smiles multiply.
This piece examines the way deception accumulates and how charm can mask harm, how language can both seduce and manipulate. The meticulous ink linework heightens the tension between tenderness and unease, clarity and confusion.
Coagulation of Deceit is about seeing clearly in hindsight. About reclaiming narrative. About turning something that once obscured the truth into an act of exposure.
