About the Art:

Surviving
Original Acrylic Painting on Canvas

Surviving is a vibrant, unapologetic self-portrait created shortly after I came out as non-binary--a moment of reclamation in more ways than one.

In this painting, my face is rendered in electric, high-saturation color: neon pinks, acid greens, burning oranges. The intensity is intentional. Survival is not muted. It is not quiet. It is charged, alive, and visible.

Across my face, the words “Silence Is Not Consent” are painted in bold lettering.

This piece addresses themes of abuse, sexual assault, and the cultural systems that rely on silence. It speaks to the ways survivors are often expected to endure quietly to soften their stories, to make others comfortable.

Creating Surviving was an act of self-definition. Coming out as non-binary required me to reexamine my relationship to visibility, voice, and autonomy. The layered colors reflect that complex identity is not singular. It is multifaceted, shifting, luminous.

Surviving is about endurance, but it is also about power. It is about reclaiming language, reclaiming the body, reclaiming the right to be seen exactly as you are.

This original painting is part of my ongoing body of work centered on survival, memory, and the tension between vulnerability and strength.
